103 – Loaded with Oakland County talent, top contender Ken Bade (Fr. DCC) looks to continue his performance from last weekend’s team state meet by pairing it with an individual state title. Even though their match last weekend was lop sided, Bade’s main competition comes from another Oakland County wrestler Oxford’s Keegan Cantera. Cantera currently has a 47-4 record and should have no problem making the semis. On the bottom side of the half bracket, Rochester freshman Josh Wood looks to make his first trip to the palace a memorable one. Wood has won titles in both MMWA and MYWAY youth competitions, his road to the semi’s should include an anticipated match-up between him and Southgate’s Jourdain Spurlin. The winner here should meet Cantera in the semis, with the winner facing Bade in the final. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Ken Bade (DCC); 2. Keegan Cantera (Oxford); 3. Kyle Pillars (Howell); 4. Josh Wood (Rochester); 5. Jourdain Spurlin (Southgate Anderson); 6. Tyler VanRooyen (Rockford); 7. Mitchell Rogaliner (Bedford); 8. Rocco Borg (Oxford) 112 – 5 Oakland County wrestlers are entered at 112, any of which are basically jockeying for places 3-8. This weight class has been owned all season by Freddie Rodriguez of Holt and Alex Calandrino of Howell. Outside of these 2 it is anyone’s game. Oakland County is very well represented in this weight class, check out OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Freddie Rodriguez (Holt); 2. Alex Calandrino (Howell); 3. Zac Roberson (Clarkston); 4. Jacob Peasley (Oxford); 5. Todd Melick (DCC); 6. Markus Gonzales (Bay City Central); 7. Trent Samuels (Jenison); 8. Ross Kantola (Hartland) 119 – Detroit Catholic Central’s defending undefeated state champion Alec Mooradian highlights this weight class. Mooradian took the first loss of his career this season and it seems that it did not faze him, he is currently 103 – 1 on his career and to bet against him would be insane. Senior Shamrock Matt Thompson has had a stellar season and should wind up somewhere in the top 8. Oxford’s Kyle Hill is also a contender to place relatively high, he has shown that he does well in big tournaments after winning the DCC Invite. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Alec Mooradian (DCC); 2. Brandon Shuart (Davison); 3. Jacob Scholten (Rockford); 4. Josh Austin (John Glenn); 5. Camryn Jackson (Lansing Eastern); 6. Kyle Hill (Oxford); 7. Matt Thompson (DCC); 8. Dominic Trevino (Holt) 125 – With 3 returning State Qualifiers from Oakland County, this weight should be a fun one to keep an eye on. There is a lot of depth across the state at 125 and we predict that 2 of the 4 OC wrestlers will find a place on the podium. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Jake Byers (Rockford); 2. Ben Matthiesen (Holt); 3. Leon Shannon (Wyandotte Roosevelt); 4. Nick Monitz (Hartland); 5. Camden Sebring (Port Huron Northern) 6. Charlie Joseph (DCC); 7. Jeff Sloney (Clarkston); 8. Harry Cassedy (Dearborn) 130 – So far this is the weight with the least depth and firepower, there are 2 Oakland County wrestlers here and both should be in the top 8 at the end of the day Saturday. Jeremy Stoian of Troy Athens has a shot to make the finals if he can get by first round Nick Mason of DCC and Korey Reinhardt of Bay City Central (assuming he beats Dyer of Holt). If Stoian makes the semis it is likely he will see either Anthony Pavlich (John Glenn) or Chase Snider (Hartland). Mason can also make this his road if he beats Stoian in the first round. We all know Coach Hancock has the Shamrocks ready to roll at the end of the season, so this should be a good first round match-up. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Jared Zimmerman (Hudsonville); 2. Jeremy Stoian (Troy Athens); 3. Jeffery Lopez (Hartland); 4. Anthony Pavlich (John Glenn); 5. Chase Snider (Hartland); 6. Tyler Schnieder (Belleville); 7. Nick Mason (DCC); 8. Korey Reinhardt (Bay City Central) 135 – A very exciting weight, there are no clear cut favorites so this is anyone’s to win. Oakland County has two wrestlers ranked in Michigan Grappler’s top 5 at 135, and that is how we predict them to place. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Brian Gibbs (Bedford); 2. Justin Melick (DCC); 3. Gabe Morse (Lowell); 4. Andy Jones (Grand Ledge); 5. AJ Fligger (Lake Orion); 6. Angelo Latora (Portage Central); 7. Larry Rybarz (Anchor Bay); 8. Austin Scogg (Rockford) 140 – This is more than likely the marquee weight class in the Division 1 State Tournament. There are 4 wrestlers from Oakland County, 3 of them are regional champions, 3 are returning state qualifiers and 2 are returning state medalists. The 2 state medalists, Matt Frisch of Oxford and Matt Dietz of Clarkston stand to make a run at their first state finals appearance. Some could say Frisch has an easier road than Dietz, especially with the probable matchup between him and Canton’s Donnie Watkins in the semi-finals. This weight has the potential for great matchups, and at the end of the weekend only 1 can remain, let’s see OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Matt Frisch (Oxford); 2. Matt Dietz (Clarkston); 3. Donnie Watkins (Canton); 4. Ben Ralston (Oxford); 5. Jordan Alvarez (Jenison); 6. Adam Fahs (Portage Central); 7. Colin Bertucci (Grand Haven); 8. Travis Mann (John Glenn) 145 – Andrew Morse of Lowell is the frontrunner at this weight, by far. We predict that all 3 Oakland County wrestlers at this weight will be on the podium, but some not as high as others. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Andrew Morse (Lowell); 2. Doug Eldridge (DCC); 3. Stevie Sattler (Anchor Bay); 4. Doug Baughman (Hartland); 5. Nick Bohn (East Kentwood); 6. Kevin Nash (Roseville); 7. Dom Arnold (Lake Orion); 8. George Abro (Troy Athens) 152 – This is another of 3 weights in a row with heavily favored wrestlers, at 152 the only test Canton’s Brent Winekoff has had all year came from an Oakland County wrestler, Farmington Harrison’s Kevin Beazley. Some say that should have been a loss for Winekoff after Beazley had him in an extremely tight headlock, but he slipped away from it unscathed and is garnering a 57-0 record. 152 has 2 wrestlers from Oakland County entered, both will have to pull off upsets to make the medal rounds. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Brent Winekoff (Canton); 2. Deshawn Nelson (East Kentwood); 3. Sven Alm (Forest Hills Central); 4. Jon Nelson (Northville); 5. Dan Fleet (Lowell); 6. Caleb Haddad (Holt); 7. Matt Willming (Anchor Bay); 8. Tyler Horne (L’Anse Creuse North) 160 – Already has 2 D2 state championships, and barring great injury or super upset, should cap off his senior year with a D1 state title. Lowell’s Jackson Morse has been a dominant force in Michigan wrestling for the past 4 years, and looks to continue that dominance in the NCAA at Illinois. Oakland County is well represented at this weight with 5 wrestlers, and we predict one of them will see Morse in the finals. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Jackson Morse (Lowell); 2. Deon’dre Polk (Pontiac); 3. Jake Johnson (Rockford); 4. Josh Roberts (Roseville); 5. Seth Hanton (Holt); 6.AJ Logan (Oxford); 7 Evan King (Clarkston); 8. Charlie Myers (Utica Eisenhower) 171 – Oakland County has 3 wrestlers here, in a very deep weight. Jake Dorulla is looking for his second state title, he should be tested by Lowell’s Ryan Olep. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Jake Dorulla (Rockford); 2. Ryan Olep (Lowell); 3. Hunter Motko (Bay City Western); 4. Mike Andring (Holt); 5. Josh Batkins (L’Anse Creuse); 6. Nick Mudar (Northville); 7. Matt Hart (Rochester Adams); 8. Alec Camp (Rochester) 189 – Chris Heald of West Bloomfield controls his destiny at this weight. He comes into the state meet with a record of 50-0 and has been relatively untested this season. He is a returning 4th place finisher at this weight a year ago and a summer of wrestling with USA Wrestling at the Junior Duals and Fargo have helped season him for this title run. There are 3 other OC wrestlers in this weight we predict 2 of which to place. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Chris Heald (West Bloomfield); 2. Gabe Dean (Lowell); 3. Anthony Abro (Canton); 4. Marco Smallman (Walled Lk Northern); 5. Austin Pickering (Port Huron Northern); 6. Steven McClure (Holland West Ottawa); 7. Caleb Rivera (Grandville); 8. Josh Hofmann (Lake Orion) 215 – So I take back my earlier statement, this IS the toughest weight class in the state bar none. At 215 Oakland County brings in 6 wrestlers (more than any weight in all 4 divisions), and many of which could jockey into the top 8 if they wrestle right. Of course the front runner is Nick McDiarmid of Hartland, but with the talent in the weight, anything can happen here! OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Nick McDiarmid (Hartland); 2. Joe Stefanski (Rockford); 3. Mike Kinville (DCC); 4. Prescott Line (Oxford); 5. Chris Nash (Roseville); 6. Willie Stewart (Lake Orion); 7. Jesse Vance (Kettering); 8. Nick Gajdzik (Stoney Creek) 285 – WIDE OPEN, this is anyone’s weight to win, seriously, no dominant force this year. We are going to go with our friends at Michigan Grappler to pick our champion and we tried to make our best guesses based on the brackets. OC Grappler’s predicted order of finish: 1. Buster Wilson (Southgate Anderson); 2. Quinton Moore (Saginaw); 3. Justin Dozier (Woodhaven); 4. Austin Caster (East Kentwood); 5. Conner Kruse (Lowell); 6. Tyler Bedgood (Kettering); 7. Dustin Gajowiak (John Glenn); 8. Adam Bennett (Romeo) |
